REF 121: Las Vacas Ravines – The Secret Caves - Small rural hamlet (4h00 - 82 kms)
This tour is not recommended for children under 10 years
Except on Saturday and Sunday
Barranco de las Vacas (Las Vacas Ravines) is a great excursion in Gran Canaria where you can get to know the special play of colours and shapes of these unique rock formations.
The Barranco de Las Vacas has become a true phenomenon of social networks, especially on Instagram.
We will begin the tour at 9:00 am and take to road to the North of the Island to the “Barranco de Las Vacas". This unique barranco is a slot canyon formed from porous volcanic ash and smoothed by water, giving it its unique flowing curves of coloured stone. Many tourists and locals often compare it to Antelope Canyon, located in the US, due to its similar appearance. The canyon is only about 50 meters long but it is 50 meters of pure spectacle. We will park our car about 300 meters from the canyon and then take a walk through the barranco.
The next stop will be the visit of beautiful caves. It is an exceptional archaeological site, consisting of a system of caves carved into volcanic tuff. According to archaeologists, the complex was used in the period from XII. to XV. Century. The easy to medium trail takes us about 15-20 minutes to get to the cave.
Then change of the scenery! It's time to visit a small rural hamlet in southeast Gran and it’s known for its rural architecture; low homes whitened with plaster and lime, with gabled roofs and terracotta tiles. It’s not just the houses in the village that are picturesque: The surrounding fields and terraces are full of Canary palm trees and lined with ancient olive groves.
After the visit it’s time to come back to the south. We will arrive about 1:00 PM.
REF 122: Aguimes - Barranco (Ravines) Guayadeque.
(5h00 – 70 kms)
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
We will begin the tour at 9:00 am, and take the road to the village of Aguïmes. The very picturesque and well-preserved centre, with narrow medieval streets, orange and yellow houses, dominated by the two large towers of the Parroquia de San Sebastián makes Agüimes one of the must-see in Gran Canaria.
We will start the visit in the Historical Centre with the Church of San Sebastian. This church is an eclectic neoclassical building, declared a national historical-artistic monument. Standing at the top of the village, its two towers and the large white dome stand out against the sky from almost everywhere. This church is clearly the symbol of Agüimes.
Nearby is the Casa de los Camellos, an over 300 years old building that belonged to an aristocratic family. A colonial-style building which used to be a barn and a stable for camels. It stands out for its traditional Canarian architecture, with beautiful interior courtyards and gardens and a charming contrast between the wood and the sun-toasted colour of its walls.
The next stop will be the Interpretation Centre of Agüimes, which allows the visitor to interpret the architectural and artistic characteristics of the Historic Quarter. During four centuries the municipality of Agüimes was the domain of the Episcopal Chamber. Testimony to those times is the Episcopal Palace, which now houses the Agüimes History Museum, next to the Parque de Los Moros.
Then change of scenery!
We will go to Barranco de Guayadeque. at a distance of 3 kilometres from the centre of Agüimes. Guayadeque is a deep gully that divides the island and which has been classified as a Natural Monument and Property of Cultural Interest. Here we find the interesting troglodyte village of Cueva Bermeja (Bermeja Cave), the Chapel of San Bartolomé Apóstol, as well as welcoming restaurants built into the mountain rocks. So, it’s time for the lunch in a cave! (Lunch is not included in the Tour Price).
We will be back around 2:00 PM.
REF 123: Hiking in a hidden hamlet in the Valleys - 5h00 - 33 kms.
This tour is not recommended for children under 10 years
Hidden in the deep valleys of south Gran Canaria, this hamlet with its discreet, traditional houses made from local stone, is surrounded by arid landscapes sheltering native plants. Life here still revolves around traditional activities such as goat herding and stone quarrying. It is the entrance to the Pilancones natural park, an area of ecological sensitivity and also a bird reserve. Its hiking routes has probably the most beautiful sights of the island.
We depart at 9:00 AM towards the “barranco” and we will park our car in the beautiful square of the village, and make a small walk to the first reservoir with his Dam. We will continue a little further up, to find another not so well-known reservoir, then we will cross the second dam to go to a viewpoint to take extraordinary photos.
Then you’ll take a break at a unique tapas bar built inside a cave that was once home to Guanches, the indigenous people of the Canary Islands. Here, you’ll sample some typical Canarian tapas. (Not Included in the Tour Price).
The Tour ends at approximately 2:00 PM.
Please note that excellent physical condition is required.
